Below, Hokusai’s “Sumidagawa Sekiya no sato”
I could have fudged my photo a bit to make it match. I had been sitting on it for a while, building up a stockpile of horse photos. I could have covered up the blue van, perhaps added some shadow…. but I’m running out of time.

la photo est tres belle, composition parfaite, mais pas sur que la calèche puisse aller aussi vite que les chevaliers japonais ;o)
the photograph is very beautiful, perfect composition, but not on the barouche can go as quickly as the Japanese knights ;o)

When I went to the Met on Saturday, I walked through a collection of Japanese prints Lincoln Kirstein had given to the Met. One was by Baido from 1895 and showed women bathing in the ocean in a collection of various Japanese wraps for swimming (?–probably would have drowned in that much cloth) and one in a Western style red-and-white striped woolen bathing suit. The print was one of a series with Mt. Fuji in the background, just like Hokusai. I can’t remember the name of the series but I think it had Fugaku (of Mr. Fuji?) in the title.

Love all the details in this building. It’s beautiful. I bet it took along time to get those details just right. The horse in the photo just makes it that much more interesting.

Photoshop, Shmotoshop. It’s just lovely as it is. The blue van adds to the modern charm. After all, don’t you have one Hokusai analogy that features construction cranes?
